Batman Begins

No More Nolan for Batman

Christopher Nolan always said that he would only do three Batman movies, and leave it at that. However, the rampant success of both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, as well as the storm of anticipation surrounding The Dark Knight Rises, have caused many to question whether he will rethink the decision. Recently, the Spanish version of Rolling Stone magazine did an interview with Christian Bale, asking him if he would ever take up the role of Batman again – and his rather teasing answer was “no, this is the last of this Batman era. Unless Nolan wants to do another”…

Needless to say, speculation has been rife since the publication of the interview. At this weekend’s Produced By Conference, the question was finally put to him once more: will he ever do another Batman movie? The answer was a rather succinct and disappointing “no”. He went on to explain his reasons: “Mainly, because I’m superstitious, but I said to my brother that I didn’t want to save anything. We’re never on a specific trajectory, but I always viewed Bruce Wayne’s story in three parts. I didn’t want to hold anything back.” His brother, by the way, is also his scriptwriting partner, Jonathan Nolan.

So, it looks like that’s it for this particular Batman franchise – you might want to take your time and savour the last one. But what is next for Nolan and his team? His wife and film making partner Emma Thompson told interviewers at Produced By that they are “going to do a film that appeals to us. We make movies that we’d like to see.” Considering the immense success of the Batman trilogy, as well as other Nolan films such as Inception and The Prestige, it is almost certain that no matter what direction they take next, we are going to enjoy seeing it too.
