Despicable Me 2

The summer of the animated sequel

Animated sequels are doing the business this summer at the box office. Despicable Me 2 has just taken $34.5 million at the US box office on opening weekend and it won’t stop there either!

The stage is being set for Monsters University to smash summer sales at the cinema, the highly anticipated sequel to 2001’s hugely successful Monsters Inc an astounding 12 years later we get a sequel. Teasers are already doing the rounds so it’s going to be a big one.

Next we have Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2, can’t say I think very much of this one, but the kids are sure to love it and it must’ve been in demand for a big budget sequel to be given the green light. Also coming later this month to a cinema near you is The Smurfs 2, yes that’s right readers the little blue people are back with a summer blockbuster sequel.

So what’s with all the animated sequels I ask you? More importantly what do we think about them? I for one am not looking forward to any of them; perhaps that is that because they’re solely directed at children? Maybe I’m becoming a cynical old man who deems them unnecessary? The debate rages on.
